Lawrence House Workshop-Heroines and Dreams
Project Statement Description: To engage a Mothetongue professional performer and a group of young women, from Lawrence House, a registered children’s home with the Department of Social Development to create a performance piece that opens a dialogue to how the refugee experience transforms these young women's lives. To provide techniques that the participants can use on their own to express their desires, needs and abilities. Performance Description: The participants will work as an ensemble and individually to performing in their own words. The theme of the work is the relationship of past but focuses on a bright present and brighter future. It celebrates the heroine that is inside of each girl. It allows for the release of baggage that inhibits growth. The performance is primarily in English, the girls are encouraged to speak any language for expression. Training Methods: The Lawrence House Project will be shaped using basic voicework, improvisation techniques, physical theatre and prompted writing,

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the workshop each participant will be able to-
• Use relaxation techniques to release the day and prepare the way for creative work. • Understand the connection between the body and breath • Use the body and physical movement as a story telling devise • Demonstrate the vocal techniques needed to produce effective voice projection for performance. • Creatively express dreams and goals • Foster the ability to work effectively together as an ensemble using movement awareness as a tool. • Use the movement tools provided to increase communication/ performance capabilities. • Understand the relationship between voice, body and emotions.

Week 1 • Introductions • Breaking the Ice • Teaching our weekly warm-up • Finding the body/Story Telling with the Body Week 2 • Warm Up • Freeing the Body Finding the Breath • Replacing words with actions/Movement Scenes • Presentation of Scenes • Home work- Listen to what you hear every day in your life. Identify a phrase that you hear all the time, Week 3 • Warm Up • Freeing the Body Finding the Breath • Replacing words with actions/Movement Scenes • Spolin Games/ Improvisation • Review of ‘things you hear all the time’.
